GRE Test 2012 Content and Structure / Pattern:-

The computer-based GRE General Test is composed of Analytical Writing, Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning sections. The Analytical Writing section is always first. In adding, one anonymous unscored section may be included and can appear in any position in the test after the Analytical Writing section. Questions in the unscored section are being tested for possible use in future tests and answers will not count toward your scores. An identified research section that is not scored may also be included, and if so, it is forever at the end of the test.

The Verbal and Quantitative sections, including the unidentified unscored section, can appear in any order. Treat each section obtainable during your test as if it counts.

Paper-based GRE General Test Content and Structure

The paper-based GRE General Test is composed of Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning and Analytical Writing sections. In adding, one anonymous unscored section may be included, and this section can appear in any position in the test after the Analytical Writing section. Questions in the unscored section are being tested for possible use in future tests and answers will not count toward your scores.

Total testing time is up to 3¾ hours. The instructions at the beginning of each section specify the total number of questions in the section and the time allowed for that section.

The Analytical Writing section is for all time first. For the "Issue" task, two topics will be assigned and you will choose one. The "Argument" task does not present a choice of topics; instead, a single topic will be presented.

GRE General Test Syllabus 2012:-

Analytical Writing:-

The Analytical Writing section consists of two analytical writing tasks: a 45-minute "Present Your Perspective on an Issue" task and a 30-minute "Analyze an Argument" task.

The "Issue" task states an opinion on an issue of general interest and asks you to address the issue from any perspective(s) you wish, as long as you provide relevant reasons and examples to explain and support your views.

The "Argument" task presents a different challenge — it requires you to critique an argument by discussing how well-reasoned you find it. You are asked to consider the logical soundness of the argument rather than to agree or disagree with the position it presents.

The "Issue" and "Argument" tasks are complementary in that the "issue" task requires you to construct a personal argument about an issue, and the "argument" task requires you to critique someone else's argument by assessing its claims.

Verbal Reasoning:-

There are four types of questions in the Verbal Reasoning section of the GRE General Test:-

Analogies — Analogy questions test your skill to recognize the relationship between the words in a word pair and to recognize when two word pairs display parallel relationships. To answer an analogy question, you must formulate the relationship between the words in the given word pair and then select the answer containing those words most closely related to one another. Some examples are relationships of kind, size, spatial contiguity or degree.

Antonyms — Antonym questions calculate the strength of your vocabulary and ability to reason from a given idea to its opposite. Antonyms can require only general information of a word, or they may require that you make fine distinctions among answer choices. Answer choices may be single words or phrases.

Sentence Completions — Sentence completion questions calculate your ability to use a variety of cues provided by syntax and grammar to recognize the in general meaning of a sentence and analyze the relationships among the component parts of the sentence. You select which of five words or sets of words can best whole a sentence to give it a logically satisfying meaning and allow it to be read as a stylistically integrated whole.

Reading Comprehension — Reading comprehension questions calculate your ability to read with sympathetic, insight and discrimination. These questions explore your ability to analyze a written passage from several perspectives, including your ability to recognize openly stated elements as well as underlying statements or influence and their implications.

There are three types of questions in the Quantitative Reasoning section of the GRE General Test:

Quantitative Comparison — These questions test your ability to reason quickly and accurately about the relative sizes of two quantities or to perceive that not enough information is provided to make such a comparison.

Problem Solving — The format of these multiple-choice questions varies. The solution may require simple computations, manipulations or multistep problem-solving.

Data Interpretation — Some problem-solving questions involve data analysis. Many occur in sets of two to five questions that share common data in the form of tables or graphs that allow you to read or estimate data values.

GRE Subject Test Computer Science

The exam tests your information of computers, networks & design. If you plan to study computer science you may require passing the GRE subject test in computer science. This exam measures your information of concepts and theory connecting to computers, networks, and design. You must also show ability in calculus and linear algebra, as they relate to computer science.

Examination of the data consists of 70 multiple choice questions with five answer choices each. Even if this is a review of data, the test is paper-pencil format. You are given 170 minutes to complete.

Interpreting Your GRE scores Computer Science

Like the other eight GRE subject tests, examination of the computer receives two scores: a first and a scale. The raw score is the total number of questions you answered properly, minus the number of incorrect answers. This figure is then converted to a scaled score somewhere between 200 and 990, the latter being a perfect result. The average scores are between 540 and 860.

In addition, you will be issued a percentile rank. This number indicates the percentage of students who got lower than you. A ranking of 90, for example, means you scored over 90% of those tested. Information GRE Exam :

GRE exam is usually taken by students who want to take admission in foreign universities for graduate programs. GRE review is conducted by the Education Testing Service (ETS) on behalf of the GRE Board and Council of Graduate Schools. The reason for the review is objective with many option questions. This note is to review the criteria essential for taking admission in a foreign university.

ETS has made some changes in the arrangement of the GRE exam to review this student-friendly and less difficult compared to other tests. This new model will help universities to assess students as well, make the right choice and allow them to register candidates most admirable. This new model will be active from August 2011.

The team of the new model ERM 2011 said: "It is the major review of the history of the GRE, which is about 60 years." They also mentioned that changes in the demographics of the makers of trial, technological changes, etc, confident them to make changes in the review model and they are really excited about the new set-up. Now 10 important changes in the new system GRE.

1. Improved Design: The new modified design can go back and forward in a particular section and to change or make changes to your answers. In this new format, you can mark and return to a question to make changes and revise. This new format is different in style compared to the current GRE. The main objective behind this new model is to create a better testing experience and natural.

2. Improving Data Quality: The quality of data used for the GRE test will be better in the new model. The new format of the GRE examination will assess student skills that are really needed for graduate programs and business.

3. Major Changes In The Verbal Section: In this re-examination of the GRE verbal section has seen the most changes. In the new format, there will be a more complex reasoning. No antonyms and analogies will be required. There will be no vocabulary that is called out of context. Expect new types of questions in this section.

4. Quantitative Analysis: The new model allows using the calculator to avoid small mistakes. The new model puts more emphasis on thinking skills and not on arithmetic. This new model focuses more on data explanation and real life scenarios.

5. Written Summary: In this section, there are no major changes, but there will be expectations respond more targeted and less generalizations.

6. New test score Information: due to new changes in the verbal and quantitative sections, the new range will be between 130 and 170 point scale with increments of 1 point increments instead of earlier points from 200 to 800 with 10 . As you may know, ETS, creator of the GRE General Test is revising the format of the event for August-September 2011. GRE General Test is designed to be revised even more closely aligned with the skills needed in today's demanding graduate and business school programs, and to help you make better decisions admissions.

GRE General Test is revised to be a friendly, more technically advanced testing that has been updated to provide you with results even more reliable.

The revised test has a new score scale that reports of verbal and quantitative reasoning steps on a 130 to 170 rating scale, in increments of 1 point (200-800 vs 10-point increments). Compression of the metric reporting means produce scores that will not exaggerate the differences in performance between small subjects examined.

The scale score for the new GRE General Test revised as follows:

Verbal reasoning scores will be reported on a new rating scale from 130 to 170 in increments of 1 point (200-800 against 10-point increments).

Scores of quantitative reasoning will be reported on a new rating scale from 130 to 170 in increments of 1 point (200-800 against 10-point increments).

Test is an examination into three parts, composed of a written test of quantitative reasoning and some verbal reasoning. The writing portion is scored from 0 to 6, while the other two parts of the test are each scored on a scale between 200 and 800. The average scores for all people who take the GRE are 470 on the verbal reasoning test and 570 on the quantitative reasoning test.

The GRE exam is taken on a computer, not with the traditional pencil and paper. It is also suitable computer, which means that different people see different questions, depending on their answers to initial questions and subsequent questions. A person who obtains the right questions will more difficult questions, while a person who fails to get some questions easier to determine their level of knowledge. The GRE is conducted by the Education Testing Service (ETS) and is one of the most important stepping stones towards a great Master’s Degree from a top university. This article aims to give you an outline regarding what you can do to maximize your Graduate Record Examination (GRE) score.

Knowledge. Nothing beats knowledge. A person who is aware of his/her surroundings is naturally better ready than one who is not. Of course, in this case the knowledge is not so much about surroundings but about the need, guide, syllabus, question type, question difficulty and important dates regarding the GRE. Be aware of these things, so that you will have a natural upper hand.

Know the direction to each question. The GRE has many different types of question which you, as a test taker, have to solve within a fixed amount of time. Do the questions at the beginning with more attention. This is because of the fact that the system of the CAT for the GRE is such that the questions at the beginning of the test affect your score more. Pay more attention to these questions.

Don’t leave any question. The GRE doesn’t carry any negative marking. As a result, be sure, that by the end of the test, you have answered all the questions.

Do a ‘test drive’ some time before the actual test. Be up to date with your test venue, know the routes to it, estimate the time you will require to start in order to reach the venue on time. Any other factor that you need to get familiar with is also included in this point.

How Do Revised GRE Scores Compare to Current GRE Scores?

As GRE is changing so does the GRE score. This is also one of the most significant changes that will come in effect with revised GRE. New 1-point increment system will be introduced from November 2011. So let’s have a look on changes in scoring pattern and how this will effect your university admission.

Basic Facts about GRE Score :

First have a look on how current system is working:

Verbal section –the current verbal section works on 200- 800 scale. There is +10 increments in scores eg. 210,220.. so on. Total possible scores are 71.Acoording to statistics, averagely two-third GRE takers score between 360 and 600 in verbal section.

Analytical Writing Section – scoring for this section reports on o-6 scale. AWA score is a collective round up score which is assigned by 2 GRE Readers. Roughly, on an average 90% students score 3 in this section.

Now see how revised system will work:

Verbal section –new revised section will report on 130-170 scale. There will 1 point increment eg. 131,132.. so on. Total possible scores will be 41.

Analytical writing section- this section will continue to score on same old 0-6 scale.

Though, scoring pattern is changing but GRE score will be valid for same 5 years as it was in past.

What ETS is saying :

According to ETS, old pattern (+ 10 increments) was not good in case of two almost near scores as it gives an impression that there is huge difference in scores eg. If one student has scored 200 and other student has 210 then this +10 increment giving an impression of huge difference, but in reality it is just one point increment. New revised system will sort out this problem as new pattern (+1 increment) will give clearer picture to compare students with almost near scores. So, there will not much difference between students who have scored 135 and 136 respectively.

How changed scoring pattern will effect your University admission:

Many students are suffering with this dilemma, whether to go with current pattern or wait for revised GRE for better scoring, number of comments that I receive daily prove this statement very true. So question is, whether changed pattern will help you in grabbing your favorite Graduate School or this will make your dream more difficult to fulfill. I think only time will tell the answer when this system will implement next year. Still if we do rough analysis, in case of old pattern suppose if university cut off for GRE is 1100 then students with 1000 score might have an opportunity to get enrolled, but with 1-point increment if required score is 150 then students with 145 score will have least(may be no) opportunity to secure admission. On the other hand, suppose two students have score 139, 140 then students with higher score surely have an advantage over student who have score 139.

If you are planning to take GRE exam from August 2011, you have to do your own analysis for positive and negatives of new GRE 2011 pattern that include changed GRE scoring pattern also. So when you are thinking about to go with current or revised GRE also think about whether to go with current or revised scoring pattern.

In my vast experiences of helping students get ready for various math tests, I have found that just plain old fashion practice practice practice has the highest success rate. You want to make sure you stretch those brain muscles before you take your test.

I know it is not glamorous, exciting or quick, but I found that most of the students that I have worked with who have gone on to pass math tests worked through math problems, asking questions about them as they arose.

The more different types of questions you look at the more comfortable and familiar you will get with working with the various types of questions. So when it gets to the real deal you will be ready to go full steam ahead.

Memorize Formulas:

The GRE test DOES NOT provide you with formulas.

Practice Your Basic Math Skills Daily:

Remember when you questioned why you need to know how to add, subtract, multiply and divide when you have a calculator? Well, here is the answer to that question. You can not use a calculator on the general GRE math test.

If you practice adding, multiplying, subtracting and dividing BEFORE the test, you will be more comfortable without a calculator when you go in and take the test. Also this might help you work the problems on the test quicker.

As you practice, make sure that you check yourself with the calculator, just in case.

Take Practice Tests:

Once you have reviewed your math and have polished up those basic math skills, then you should look at some practice tests.

This will help you become familiar with the different types of questions that will come your way on the test.

It will also help you get used to the directions that you will see on the test, which can help you save time when you take it.

There are two practice tests at this website: Test I, the Warm-up Test and Test II, the Adaptive Test.

DO NOT Cram the Night Before the Test:

Yes, do go over math problems, but do not try to do it all the night before and don't over do it the night before. If you try to overload your brain in a short time it might explode during the test (or at least feel like it.

DO NOT Stay Up All Night:

Yes, I do know that it might be hard to get to sleep early on the eve of the big test, however try not to stay up all night. I have had students say they were up all night before a test and literally fell asleep during the test. Even if you don't go to sleep, your brain will be tired and consequently you will not be able to perform to your full potential.

2. New Text Completion questions test your ability to interpret, evaluate and reason from what you've read. Text Completion questions test this ability by omitting crucial words from short passages, requiring you to fill them in by selecting words or phrases.
3. New Sentence Equivalence questions test your ability to reach a conclusion about how a sentence should be completed while focusing on the meaning of the whole sentence.
4. There are more Reading Comprehension questions on the test, including new types of questions, such as selecting multiple correct answer choices instead of just one, or highlighting a sentence within a reading passage to answer the question.
5. The revised test still requires basic math skills like arithmetic, algebra, geometry and data analysis; however, it will focus more on questions involving data interpretation and real-life scenarios.
6. New Multiple-choice questions which include some that have more than one correct answer, requiring you to select all of the correct answers from the choices provided.
7. New Numeric Entry questions require you to enter your answer in a box instead of selecting an answer from a list.

I have always wondered about the relevance of GRE/ GMAT / SAT/ IELTS. These exams have their own flaws and may be perceived as regressive patterns of testing the knowledge, aptitude and analytical abilities of a graduate student. I am in no which way an expert, scholar or authority who can strongly detest the usage of the aforementioned exams in selection criteria of students for a study abroad program. The bottom line is that these exams are bridges across global schools which facilitate the selection of deserving students.

In my honest opinion exams like GRE are a matter of hard work and luck; both the determinants sharing the credit of your success equally. However, at times you may have a bad day or may be you are ill while you appeared for the exams. The results obviously are skewed towards the lower percentiles.

Those looking to take classes in the U.S. who are from another country will have extra hurdles to cross in order to get accepted into the school of their choice. Extra testing is one of these. If you are looking to enroll in an education program in the United States, yet English is not your first language, you need to be aware of the basic exams you will be asked to take. These may include the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and the Graduate Record Examination (GRE).

What the TOEFL Tests

The TOEFL test is designed to determine whether or not you can speak adequate English to enroll in the program. You will be asked to read, listen to, comprehend, and write in English on order to pass the test. This is the test that over 6,000 institutions in over 130 countries choose when determining whether or not an applicant can speak fluent English.

The first section of the test contains 50 listening comprehension questions. You will be asked to listen to a variety of spoken passages, such as a class lecture or a passage being read. It will be read as spoken by a North American English speaker. You will then answer questions on what you heard. The second part of the test is a 40 question structure and written expression section. This tests whether or not you can recognize the proper structure of written English. The reading comprehension section involves 50 questions based on non-technical, college-level reading material. Finally, you will be asked to write a passage on a given topic to judge your ability to write in English. Each of these sections is timed, so you will need to be fairly adept at reading and comprehending English.

Who Needs to Take This Test

The TOEFL is designed to test whether or not you can understand and use English as spoken in American on the college level. While you may be a great English speaker, attending classes requires a higher level of understanding and speaking ability than conversational English. Any non-native speakers who wish to attend an English-speaking college can take this test, and it may be required for entry. It is a good idea for those pursuing both undergraduate and graduate degrees, but some graduate schools will accept students who graduated from English-speaking programs for their undergrad degrees without the test results. The test results are valid for two years after the exam is first scored.

What is the GMAT?

The GMAT or Graduate Management Admissions Test is for the most part a required part of the admissions process for full time business schools. The GMAT test is a standardized 3 part exam which helps admissions officers select the very best of applicants. It measures basic verbal, mathematical and analytical writing skills that an applicant is expected to have developed over the years of formal education and professional work experience.

What is the GRE?

The GRE (Graduate Record Exam) is part of the admissions process for graduate school programs. This is not business specific like the GMAT test and is used for all types of graduate programs. Some business schools are beginning to accept the GRE along with the GMAT but the number is very limited and the GMAT is to be considered the standard for business schools.

GMAT vs GRE:

The GMAT and GRE are very similar tests in that they both test analytical writing, math and verbal. The GMAT also tests Verbal-Critical Reasoning and Quantitative-Data Sufficiency which are not found on the GRE. The GRE contains problems on vocabulary and word relationships that the GMAT does not test on.

Overall business school applications are on the rise and your GMAT score has become that much more important. MBA programs are counter cyclical to the economy which means that as the economy falls individuals flock to MBA programs to further their education and provide a much needed boost to their resume.

GRE Preparation Experience

Some people don’t believe in usefulness of studying for any standardized tests. My experience has been completely opposite. I first took GRE without a day of preparation a year after graduating from university. I didn’t really need to score high and thought since I had good grades in school, GRE wouldn’t be that tough. I was wrong and did pretty bad. Five years later I got serious about the grad school, decided to apply to a prestigious university and had to get a very high score on GRE. It took me about 4 months to prepare to the level where I was comfortable. I could have probably used few more weeks, but was getting so tired of studying that decided to go for it.

English has been my weaker point, so I spent the most time working on that part: first increasing my vocabulary and then practicing verbal questions as much as I could. Since I was pretty comfortable with math, I left it for the last month of my preparation and mainly concentrated on getting timing right. Here is the list of the materials that I used to study. Hopefully some of this might be useful for the future test takers.

1. Word Smart for the GRE (Smart Guides)

There are about 600 words in this little book. It’s not perfect, examples are a little “cheesy” and there is no pronunciation guide. Yet, I think this book really helped me. At first I tried to use flashcard software on my pocket pc to help me memorize new words, but for some reasons that didn’t work well and I felt that I could remember more words using just good ol’ paper flash cards. I am not sure, maybe it’s the process of writing the word down, but somehow I felt I could remember more words that way. There are also little quizzes after every 5-15 words to help with learning. I think one could probably memorize about 80 words a week, though I averaged about 40-50. Obviously this is not the best method of acquiring new words, yet it did work for me. Several of them came up on GRE and quite a few I still remember.

2. The Wizard of Oz Vocabulary Builder by Mark Philips

This a pretty cool book, it introduces “GRE and SAT type” words in the context of a story to ease memorization. I didn’t find it as useful as the Word Smart book, yet it was a nice change from just memorizing disconnected words. Every new “big” word is explained on the same page, with more examples to make it easier to remember words. Overall it was a pretty good, though a somewhat slower way of increasing vocabulary for GRE.

3. Kaplan GRE Exam Verbal Workbook

This book has strategies and tips for verbal section and the most important a lot of test questions. It helped me a lot with reading comprehension part and just getting over my “fear” of verbal section.

4.Barron’s How to Prepare for the GRE Test I think out of all GRE preparation books, this one is the most useful. It has pretty good math review and its test questions are probably the closest to the GRE difficulty level maybe even a little harder. Barron also has a book “Pass Key to the GRE Test”, which is basically a smaller version of this book. I’ve also noticed that they reuse a lot of questions from previous editions, so if you’re on the budget you don’t have to buy the latest edition. An older version will be just as good and the newest edition will repeat many questions anyway.

5. GRE: Practicing to Take the General Test, by ETS This book is published by the same guys that make the test. The review section is not that good, you’ll probably be better off with Barron or Kaplan for that. However, tests are real GRE questions that were used about 10 years ago. The test has definitely increased in difficulty since then. I was somewhat disappointed with this book, yet I think 1 or 2 questions (or very similar) from the verbal section appeared on the actual test that I took. ETS definitely recycles questions, so it can be helpful to go through this book, but keep in mind that the real test will be much harder, especially the math section.

6. POWERPREP by ETS This is a software you can download from ETS website or you will get it in the mail after you register for the test. Don’t wait though for the “mail version”, mine came after I’ve already taken the test. This is the closest you will get to the real test questions; however again I thought questions on the real test were harder. Yet it is very helpful to measure your progress using this software. I took the first test after about two weeks of studying to establish a baseline and then the second one about 2-3 weeks before the test to see where I was and find any weak spots. My actual test results were almost identical to the results on my second Powerprep test.

Few suggestions:

1. Work on your weakest parts first. If it’s vocabulary start your preparation with memorizing words and then move on to the areas that you are more comfortable with.

2. Establish your baseline score by taking one of the Powerprep tests early on.

3. You don’t have to spend a fortune on study material, last year editions are just as good.

4. Test has become harder over the past few years, so don’t get over confident if you do really well on the “retired” ETS tests. The level of difficulty is much higher now.

First, you need to know your current skill level and how much you can score with the practice test.
To determine your current skill level, take a practice test using Power Prep for GRE. Lets assume you got 900 in practice test.
Next determine how much you want to score in GRE (Be Realistic). It would be nice to score 1600/1600, but you only certain amount of time to study.
Your GRE Study plan will depend on the following

Type of university you want to attend

Score you want to get – Target Score.

So, lets assume you decided on a Target Score of 1200. Next you have to plan your course of action to reach the target.
Make a detailed note of your strengths and weakness from the practice test. To improve your scores, you have to work on your weakness.
Determine your learning style.

Would you like to spend fixed time every day

like to work with another friend preparing for exams

Spend fixed time 2 days in a week, ..

To reach the target score of 1200 in GRE Test, amount of time you have to spend has to be calculated based on

your learning style

If you have only 2 months and I need to score 1200 and can spend only 1 hour per week, then you can expect to score in GRE between 900 to 1000.
GRE Study Materials: Make sure you have enough and right test preparation materials. If you plan to study for 3 months, then you need to have study materials for 3 months.
Have a notebook to track your performance.
Spend allocated according to the plan. Work on your weak areas ( Verbal Words, Maths Algebra,..).
After completing the GRE practice test, make sure you spend more time analysis the mistakes. If you spent 2 hours taking the test, spend atleast 3 hours to analyze the mistakes. Instead if you spend 30 mins to just see the right answers, you are not improving your weak areas.
Make a note of the mistakes you made and revise them weekly. So, you will not repeat the same mistakes again.
Don’t forget to spend time to practice tests in strong areas of GRE Test.
You need to have checkpoint to track your progress. If you have 4 months to study and need to improve 200 points, then every month your score has to improve towards the target score.

For Example if you are weak in GRE Reading Comprehension and you spent 1 week in learning new strategies and if you still get it wrong, then try new strategies. Solve 25 RC’s per day. Live and sleep RC’s, you will get it.
You MUST stick to your study plan and follow it strictly. You need to have self-discipline to follow the plan and that what differentiates from people who just have BIG dreams and Achievers. You might get a tempting invite from friends to go to movie, during your study time and you will decide – “I will go to movies and will make it up next day”. GRE Exam is all about strategy and timing. I have meet and spoke to so many students who took GRE and I was able to find a pattern, that will allow to estimate how much you can score in actual GRE Test. Wouldn’t it be nice to know the score range even before you take GRE test?

When Can I know GRE Score Range

You can find out how much you can score in GRE only 3 to 5 days before your actual GRE Test date. But, having an idea will help you to decide on which 4 universities to forward gre scores. That will save more than $100 during graduate school application GRE score forwarding.

GRE Score Calculator

I have suggested to take ETS Powerprep exam only 1 week to 5 days before actual GRE exam. That’s the only source where the tests are scored using the same patten asgre exam is evaluated.
You can take powerprep practice tesst many times. Only few questions will be repeated.
With 2 gre practice test in ETS Powerprep, you can take more than 5 to 8 times. Make a note of scores you get in powerprep.
Don’t take powerprep exam as yet another practice test. Make every attempt to take it seriously and put your 100% effort to score more.
For instance, you can score 400 in gre verbal section first test and score 500 in second gre practice test. So, if you take 8 powerprep gre practice test, then make a note of the score and save it in ascending order.

I scored more than Practice Test Range

Is that possible? To score more than that maximum score in Verbal and Quanititaive section. Yes, if you scoring 750 in Math section, you can score 800, but if you are getting 700 to 750 in GRE Practice test, it will be tough sk to score 800 out of 800. But, for Verbal I really doubt, you can increase the score overnight from 450 to 650+.

How GRE Test Is Scored?

Preparing for GRE Test takes dedicated effort and time, but staying informed on how GRE Exam is scored will definitely give an edge for GRE Test taker. I have seen many students preparing for GRE find it bit tough to understand the GRE Test scoring concept. Here’s a question I came across

Question on GRE Scoring :
I just finished giving the first test in the ETS PowerPrep software, and was pleasantly surprised to have a score of 750. But when I was reviewing my mistakes, I was shocked to see that I made 11 mistakes! And the mistakes were pretty evenly spread out through out the section. The mistakes were in Questions: 3,5,9,14,16,18,20,21,24,27,28. We know it is a CAT exam, despite that fact, how did I end up with such a high score

That made me wonder whether PowerPrep is reliable? I have heard people getting 780/790 with 4 mistakes, but still 750 with 11 mistakes looks like a bit too much. But if this is actually the normal scenario, I am more than happy . By the way, my math percentile rank was 84, if it helps by any way. I am hoping that I the reason for this score can be partly explained by the fact that I got 11 of the first 15 correct. Anyone knows how the math is scored in the real exam? I have heard though PowerPrep is a pretty good indicator of the real exam.

GRE Exam – First Few Questions

GRE Test is adaptive and first few questions will have more weight/points

Questions that appear in later part of the GRE Exam has less value.

All the questions that appear in the exam should have been previously appeared in exam under Experimental Section and based on how students answer that question, points/difficulty level will be assigned

GRE questions determined in such way will appear during first few questions and getting few answers wrong will bring down the score for sure.

GRE Score Range – Big Range

In the GRE Exam first few questions will help the system determine which score range the student fit in. For example, if test take get first 6 to 8 questions right, then GRE Test system will assign the range of 700 to 800. So, test takers score will be only above 700.
Next few questions tries to determine the scores within 700 to 800 range. If GRE test taker gets 2 or 3 questions wrong in first 6 to 8 questions, then the score range of say 650 to 750 will be assigned and following questions will help the system determine the score within 650 to 750.
It’s my understanding that first question will have value around 700 and getting it right will have next question of 730 in value. If student gets second question then next question will have 720 value. So, first 6 to 8 question will help determine the Big Range in GRE Exam.

Final GRE Score – Within Big Range

One the outer GRE Score range is determined, then rest of question will help determine the sub range of that. For example,if the Outer Range is 700 to 800, then next few questions will have value within 700 to 800. If the GRE test taker gets all the questions right, then next range will be set between 750 to 800.

Providing incorrect answers for one or 2 questions will reduce the range from 700 to 780 or so. But the hard part is to identify what is the value of each question. Best thing GRE test take can do is try to get all the questions right.

In the pattern Final GRE score will be determined. To answert the above students question, he should have got all the high value/weight questions right even though 11 answers were incorrect.

GRE tests three things:

1. Your basic intelligence (in Quanti and Reading Comprehension)

2. Your speed of responding (that's why the time limit is kept...and so, many of you who are practicing for the GRE must be finding difficult)

3. How well you perform under pressure? And also I used Barrons and Kaplan tests and bigbook. All these material are no longer useful as ets had tremendously increased the difficulty level of questions especially the quans and the reading comprehension questions.

If you are pretty clear in the above things then a good GRE score is not that difficult.

First and foremost suggestion:

Don't get tensed up. Remain cool and calm. Sometimes the only difference between a good score and a bad score is your mental strength. Just chill. No worries, no tension. Talk to yourself. Tell yourself that you can do it. If you win over your tension, then GRE is a piece of cake leading to a good GRE score.

Second thing:

Practice is the key to success. Give as many practice tests as possible. Grebible and Powerprep are a must. You can also try out Arco.

Practice tests and the CAT tests in grebible are excellent. The difficulty level is very very high in grebible. That's the reason why I was able to score much in the verbal and in the quans.

If you go without giving practice tests, that too practice tests with difficulty high level of questions. Your chances of good GRE Scores are negligible. You will end up with a average GRE score

The main advantage for me was that I got 4 analogies and 2 sentence completion questions straight from grebible practice tests. These questions were within my fist 10 questions. That boosted my gre score. Thank god else I would have been sitting with computers and doing silly things in my office.

I had no time to study for gre as my work is very hard. I used to come home only at 11 or 12 or even 2 in the night. But it was a passion for me to study MS. Some pople belive that preparing for standardized tests is a waste of time. Others feel that preparation is the key to scoring well. The fact is that even if you are unable to increase your I.Q. anytime in the near future, preparing to take standardized tests is very helpful. At the very least, you will gain valuable test-taking time by familiarizing yourself with the test format and the types of questions you will be asked. Here are some suggestions on how to prepare for specific standardized tests.

For the GRE General Test, the first place you should turn is the testing center itself, ETS. Contact the address above or call their publication phone number 1-800-537-3160 and order their booklet of past GRE General Tests (cost $15.00, 1994. You can also use the one sample test included in their registration package free of charge). Only ETS can give you actual tests used in the past. The issue essay question on the Graduate Records Examination (GRE) will present you with two topics from which to choose. You will have to take a position on one of these topics and defend it. Follow these steps to prepare yourself for the issue essay portion of the gre exam.

1. Step 1

Become familiar with the GRE issue essay pool of topics. This can be found online at the GRE Web site.

2. Step 2

Take your time in selecting the topic on which to write. Make sure to pick the topic you feel strongest about and can most easily defend.

3. Step 3

Write a brief outline of your paragraph topics before writing to help keep you focused. The GRE issue essay is timed so don't spend too much time on this step.

4. Step 4

Be Aware

By the time you have finished your GRE preparation, you should be aware of the type of questions that will appear in the GRE Test. You should also be aware of how long each section is and the time limits. This will help you pace yourself through the test.

Know the directions for each question

Knowing the directions for the questions beforehand will save you valuable time. But remember the directions for the questions in the GRE Test might be slightly different from the ones in your study material. So always read the instructions but do it quickly.

Don't stick to one question for too long

By the time you have finished your GRE preparation, you should have a good estimate of how much time you can give to a particular question. Don't get stuck on one particular question for too long. This might cause you to lose precious time and miss questions you could have easily done.

Don't Rush

The GRE Test is about optimizing. Finishing the paper first is not what is important. You should devote just the right amount of time to each question. Maximizing your marks in a given period of time is your aim. So don't rush it as that might cost you valuable marks.

The questions at the beginning are the most important

The questions at the beginning affect your score more than those towards the end. Take your time with those questions. It is vital that you get those questions right. Getting these correct will dramatically improve your score.

Selection by Elimination

When you don't know the answers to some questions, try and use the method of elimination. You may have a very good idea of which option cannot be the answer. Eliminate such options. It narrows down your guess to just maybe two options and sometimes down to one.

Don't leave any question

The GRE Test does not penalize you for wrong answers. So never leave any question unanswered.

Be very sure of your answer before proceeding

With the Computer-Adaptive Test (CAT) for GRE, you cannot return to a question once you have attempted it. You cannot leave the difficult questions for later nor can you check your answers towards the end even if you have extra time. So pace yourself properly and be very certain of your answers.

Get adequate rest the night before

Before the test, relax. Research shows a person who is relaxed usually does much better than a person who is tense during an exam. Get enough sleep before the D-Day. Also if your GRE is in the morning, take a light breakfast. A heavy one might make you drowsy.

Do a test drive exactly a week before your test

Getting to the test center on time is vital. In fact you should try and get to the test center 15-30 minutes before time. Taking a test drive to your test center exactly a week before might be a good idea. This will give you a rough idea of the traffic conditions at the time and day of your GRE.

Wear Comfortable Clothes

Wear comfortable clothes to your GRE test center. It might be a good idea to carry a sweater or a jacket, in case you start feeling cold. Also make a check list well in advance of what all you need on the D-day and keep everything ready the night before. One of the things you need is a chronometer. (In case you don't know what that means, start preparing for the GRE vocabulary ;-)

Use the scratch paper the test center provides

You are not allowed to bring any sheets of paper to the GRE test center but are provided scratch paper by the center. You should make effective use of this to make quick notes for yourself or for solving math questions.

And lastly DON'T PANIC

No matter what happens, DON'T PANIC. Keep your cool all the time, even when you don't know the answer. Once you panic, you might even answer the easiest questions wrongly. If you feel yourself getting tense, take a short break, ask for a glass of water, close your eyes, take deep breaths and calm yourself down.

Computer-Based General Test

Structure of the Computer-Based General Test

The computer-based General Test contains four sections, one of which is an unidentified pretest section that can appear in any position in the test after the analytical writing section. Questions in the pretest section are being tested for possible use in future tests and answers will not count toward your scores. An identified research section that is not scored may also be included and this section would always appear in the final section of the test. Questions in the research section are included for the purpose of ETS research and answers will not count toward your scores.

Total testing time is up to 3 1/4 hours, not including the research section. The directions at the beginning of each section specify the total number of questions in the section and the time allowed for the section. The analytical writing section will always be first. For the Issue task, two topics will be presented and you will choose one. The Argument task does not present a choice of topics; instead, one topic will be presented. The verbal and quantitative sections may appear in any order, including an unidentified verbal or quantitative pretest section. Treat each section presented during your test as if it counts.

For the Issue task, two essay topics will be presented and you will choose one. The Argument task does not present a choice of topics; instead one topic will be presented.

An unidentified verbal or quantitative pretest section may be included and may appear in any order after the analytical writing section. It is not counted as part of your score.

An identified research section that is not scored may be included and it will always be at the end of the test.

Modified Versions of Verbal and Quantitative Questions

The test you take may include questions that are modified versions of published questions or of questions you have already seen on an earlier section of the test. Some modifications are substantial; others are less apparent. Thus, even if a question appears to be similar to a question you have already seen, it may in fact be a different question and may also have a different correct answer. You can be assured of doing your best on the test you take by paying careful attention to the wording of each question as it appears in your test.

The GRE Program is currently investigating the feasibility of reusing questions that have been published in GRE practice materials. As part of that investigation, you may see questions from these materials on a test you take.

When applying to a University, you need to include certain items as part of your application package. Each college has its own set of requirements, but the sample list given below should satisfy the needs of most colleges.

1. Bank Draft :

Prepare a bank draft in favor of the University that you are applying to, for the required application fee (e.g. $50).

2. Admission Forms :

Include the right number of copies of your admission form (e.g. 3). Make sure you've included all the forms required by looking up the college's application checklist.

3. Official Transcripts of Undergraduate Coursework (2 copies) :

Prepare transcripts of all undergraduate coursework completed at the time of applying to the US, and have all copies sealed and stamped by your undergraduate university to make them 'official'.

4. Three Letters of Recommendation :

Get recommendation letters from Professors who are familiar with your undergraduate academic work. Many Univs also ask you to include a 'Student Evaluation Form' along with your recommendation letters. 5. Personal Statement :

Your mark-sheets & score reports speak for themselves, therefore a 'Personal Statement' is the only means you have to communicate to the admissions officer why you deserve to be admitted to their University. Go through the Personal Statement section for detailed information.

6. Financial Certificate :

At the time of applying, you need to indicate sufficient funds to support your education. Request your bank to issue a certificate as proof of the same.

7. Letter of Support :

If a relative or friend is sponsoring your education, then you have to include a signed letter of support from them, indicating their willigness to fund your study in the US.

8. Copy of GRE & TOEFL score reports :

You can include a copy of your GRE & TOEFL score reports, but you should also make sure that you pay ETS to send your scores directly to the Universities you are applying to.

9. Additional Certificates :

Most colleges don't value certificates for extra curricular activities unless they are directly related to your chosen field of study. But, if you have work experience or have completed projects in your intended field of study, you should definitely include a letter/certificate from your employer or supervisor.

GRE Information, What is GRE ?

The Graduate Record Examination is held by the Educational Testing Service and is required for admissions into graduate programmes in universities in the United States of America and Singapore.

Being a Computer Adaptive Test, it can be taken any time of the year.

All one has to do is book a date with the ETS to write the GRE.

The GRE has three sections:

1 Quantitative Reasoning: This mainly includes basic mathematics questions -- 28 questions to be attempted in 45 minutes. One can score a maximum of 800 in this section.

2 Verbal Ability: 30 questions in 30 minutes is acknowledged by most to be the toughest section in the examination, especially for non-native English speakers. The highest score possible in this section is also 800.

3 Analytical Writing Ability: This requires students to write two essays -- one expressing your opinion on a topic, and another in which you are expected to analyse an argument. This section is scored out of 6.

Got tips to crack the GRE?

When to start

This is the question that plagues most students during their pre-final year.

Many believe the GRE requires close to six months of intensive preparation. This, I think, is a fallacy.

The GRE is not a particularly difficult examination. Really!

As an engineer/ engineering student, the Quantitative Reasoning section of the GRE shouldn't be too difficult, especially after spending four years in the company of engineering mathematics.

But if you are like most engineers and have had a healthy disdain for English through school, Verbal Ability is unlikely to be a cakewalk.

Taking everything into consideration, cracking the GRE does not require more than a couple of months of hard work.

Pre-final year students have the advantage of having a summer break before the final year. This summer break can be put to good use, especially if you manage to cloister yourself in a room, away from distractions.

The best time, in my opinion, to book a date for writing the GRE is in the month of June or early July. After that, academic pressures may put a damper on your preparation for the exam.

If you postpone taking the exam to September, you could suddenly find yourself pressed for time. This is mainly because the official GRE scores do not arrive until three weeks after you take the examination.

More important, writing the GRE is merely a small part in the entire application process.

Booking a date

1 The easiest way to book a date to write the GRE is to call Prometric India on (011) 2651 1649.

Writing the examination will put you back by $140 (Rs 6,115 approximately).

2 You need an international credit card to book your seat.

3 Monday is a good day to choose to write the GRE because Saturday and Sunday are likely to be holidays, and so you miss fewer classes (or days of work).

Study material

The GRE guides on the planet are probably outnumbered only by the number of institutions claiming to give you a passport to the Indian Institutes of Management.

Choosing the right mix is not very easy and involves trial and error.

A few books and CDs that I, and a few of my acquaintances, found helpful are:

1 Barron's How to Prepare for the GRE: Graduate Record Examination, 14th edition.

This is a book every GRE aspirant is undoubtedly aware of.

It is most famous for its 50 word lists, containing arcane words the testers at ETS love to ask.

Read the book. You will totally believe that the people at ETS do not speak normal English like the rest of us.

2 GRE Big Book, published by the Educational Testing Service.

The Big Book is little known. But it is one I found extremely useful.

It contains 27 question papers culled from the paper and pencil avatar of the GRE over several years, and is published by the same people who set the tests, ETS.

Unfortunately, it is out of print and is very difficult to find.

With a little perseverance, you can get hold of a photocopy of the same. If you are decent at Quantitative Reasoning, you can safely skip those sections here.

This book is a must-have!

3 Kaplan Higher Score on the GRE CD

This CD contains a diagnostic test, three full-length Computer Adaptive Tests and six sectional tests, in addition to a few nifty tools.

The Verbal Ability Section is much tougher than what one is likely to find elsewhere (and in the actual exam as well). The Quantitative Reasoning section is tougher as well.

So do not be surprised if you witness a terrible dip in your performance when you try this out.

4 The Princeton Review CD

The Princeton Review CD has quite a few Computer Adaptive Tests which are a lot easier than the actual GRE, in my opinion.

Attempt to score a minimum of 1,450 or so in these tests. For a sample test online, click here.

5 The PowerPrep CD

When you book your date to write the GRE, you will receive this CD from ETS.

This CD does not have as much information as one might expect (shocking, especially when one looks at how much ETS charges the test taker!).

I strongly recommend preserving one of the two diagnostic tests on the CD for the day before the GRE. This is because repeated experiments with several people I know seem to indicate that what you score in the actual GRE will hover around your score in the PowerPrep test.

There are lots of other test prep CDs and books you can avail of. (Cambridge and Peterson's crop to mind), but it is best to stick to these.

If you have the time, inclination and money for the others, do give them a shot.

READING COMPREHENSION QUESTIONS

Reading comprehension questions measure your ability to read with understanding, insight and discrimination. This type of question explores your ability to analyze a written passage from several perspectives. These include your ability to recognize both explicitly stated elements in the passage and assumptions underlying statements or arguments in the passage as well as the implications of those statements or arguments.

Because the written passage upon which the questions are based presents a sustained discussion of a particular topic, there is ample context for analyzing a variety of relationships.

Pay attention to the following as you review the passage:

The function of a word in relation to a larger segment of the passage

The relationships among the various ideas in the passage

The relationship of the author to the topic or to the audience.

You will find six types of reading comprehension questions to answer:

Information explicitly stated in the passage
Information or ideas implied or suggested by the author
Possible applications of the author's ideas to other situations, including the identification of situations or processes analogous to those described in the passage
The author's logic, reasoning, or persuasive techniques
The tone of the passage or the author's attitude as it is revealed in the language used.

In each edition of the General Test, there are three or more reading comprehension passages, each providing the basis for answering two or more questions. The passages are drawn from different subject matter areas, including the humanities, the social sciences, the biological sciences, and the physical sciences.

Here are some approaches that may help you in answering reading comprehension questions:

Since reading passages are drawn from many different disciplines and sources, you may not be familiar with the material in every passage. Do not be discouraged if you encounter unfamiliar material. Questions are to be answered on the basis of the information provided in the passage, and you are not expected to rely on outside knowledge of a particular topic.
You should analyze each passage carefully before answering the accompanying questions. As with any kind of close and thoughtful reading, look for clues that will help you understand less explicit aspects of the passage. Try to separate main ideas from supporting ideas or evidence. Try also to separate the author's own ideas or attitudes from information he or she is presenting.
Note transitions from one idea to the next, and examine the relationships among the different ideas or parts of the passage. For example, are they contrasting? Are they complementary? Consider the points the author makes, the conclusions drawn, and how and why those points are made or conclusions are drawn.
Read each question carefully and be certain that you understand exactly what is being asked.
Always read all the answer choices before selecting the best answer.
The best answer is the one that most accurately and most completely answers the questions being posed. Be careful not to pick an answer choice simply because it is a true statement. Be careful also not to be misled by answer choices that are only partially true or only partially satisfy the problem posed in the question.
Answer the questions on the basis of the information provided in the passage. Do not rely on outside knowledge. Your own views or opinions may sometimes conflict with the views expressed or the information provided in the passage. Be sure that you work within the context of the passage. You should not expect to agree with everything you encounter in reading passages.

1. People attend college or university for many different reasons (for example, new experiences, career preparation, increased knowledge). Why do you think people attend college or university? Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.

People attend colleges or universities for a lot of different reasons. I believe that the three most common reasons are to prepare for a career, to have new experiences, and to increase their knowledge of themselves and the world around them.

Career preparation is becoming more and more important to young people. For many, this is the primary reason to go to college, They know that the job market is competitive. At college, they can learn new skill for careers with a lot of opportunities. This means careers, such as information technology, that are expected to need a large workforce in the coming years.

Also, students go to colleges and universities to have new experiences. This often means having the opportunity to meet people different from those in their hometowns. For most students, going to college is the first time they’ve been away from home by themselves. In additions, this is the first time they’ve had to make decisions on their own. Making these decisions increases their knowledge of themselves.

Besides looking for self-knowledge, people also attend a university or college to expand their knowledge in subjects they find interesting. For many, this will be their last chance for a long time to learn about something that doesn’t relate to their career.

I would recommend that people not be so focused on a career. They should go to college to have new experiences and learn about themselves and the world they live in.

2. Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Parents are the best teachers. Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.

Throughout my life, I have been lucky enough to have a very good relationship with my parents. They have supported me, given me necessary criticism, and taught me a great deal about how to live my life. Parents can be very important teachers in our lives; however, they are not always the best teachers.

Parents may be too close to their children emotionally. Sometimes they can only see their children though the eyes of a protector. For example, they may limit a child's freedom in the name of safety. A teacher might see a trip to a big city as a valuable new experience. However, it might seem too dangerous to a parent.

Another problem is that parents may expect their children's interests to be similar to their own. They can't seem to separate from their children in their mind. If they love science, they may try to force their child to love science too. But what if their child's true love is art, or writing, or car repair?

Parents are usually eager to pass on their value to their children. But should children always believe what their parents do? Maybe different generations need different ways of thinking. When children are young, they believe that their parents are always rights. But when they get older, they realize there are other views. Sometimes parents, especially older ones, can't keep up with rapid social or technology changes. A student who has friends of all different races and backgrounds at school may find that her parents don't really understand or value the digital revolution. Sometimes kids have to find their own ways to what they believe in.

The most important thing to realize is that we all have many teachers in our lives. Our parents teach us, our teachers teach us, and our peers teach us. Books and newspapers and television also teach us. All of them are valuable.

3. Nowadays, food has become easier to prepare. Has this change improved the way people live? Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.

The twentieth century has brought with it many advances. With those advances, human lives have changed dramatically. In some ways life is worse, but mostly it is better. Changes in food preparation methods, for example, have improved our lives greatly.

The convenience of preparing food today is amazing. Even stoves have gotten too slow for us. Microwave cooking is much easier. We can press a few buttons and a meal is completely cooked in just a short time. People used to spend hours preparing an oven-cooked meal, and now they can use that time for other, better things. Plus, there are all kinds of portable, prepackaged foods we can buy. Heat them in the office microwave, and lunch at work is quick and easy.

Food preparation today allows for more variety. With refrigerators and freezers, we can preserve a lot of different foods in our homes. Since technology makes cooking so much faster, people are willing to make several dishes for even a small meal. Parents are more likely to let children be picky, now that they can easily heat them up some prepackaged macaroni and cheese on the side. Needless to say, adults living in the same house may have very different eating habits as well. If they don’t want to cook a lot of different dishes, it’s common now to eat out at restaurants several times a week.

Healthful eating is also easier than ever now. When people cook, they use new fat substitutes and cooking sprays to cut fat and calories. This reduces the risk of heart disease and high cholesterol. Additionally, we can buy fruits and vegetable fresh, frozen or canned. They are easy to prepare, so many of us eat more of those nutritious items daily. A hundred years ago, you couldn’t imagine the process of taking some frozen fruit and ice from the freezer, adding some low-fat yogurt from a plastic cup and some juice from a can in the refrigerator, and whipping up a low-fat smoothie in the blender!

Our lifestyle is fast, but people still like good food. What new food preparation technology has given us is more choices. Today, we can prepare food that is more convenient, healthier, and of greater variety than ever before in history.

4. It has been said, “Not every thing that is learned is contained in books.” Compare and contrast knowledge gained from experience with knowledge gained from books. In your opinion, which source is more important? Why?

“Experience is the best teacher” is an old cliché, but I agree with it. The most important, and sometimes the hardest, lessons we learn in life come from our participation in situations. You can’ learn everything from a book.

Of course, learning from books in a formal educational setting is also valuable. It’s in schools that we learn the information we need to function in our society. We learn how to speak and write and understand mathematical equations. This is all information that we need to live in our communities and earn a living.

Nevertheless, I think that the most important lessons can’t be taught; they have to be experienced. No one can teach us how to get along with others or how to have self-respect. As we grow from children into teenagers, no one can teach us how to deal with peer pressure. As we leave adolescence behind and enter adult life, no one can teach us how to fall in love and get married.

This shouldn’t stop us from looking for guidelines along the way. Teachers and parents are valuable sources of advice when we’re young. As we enter into new stages in our lives, the advice we receive from them is very helpful because they have already bad similar experiences. But experiencing our own triumphs and disasters is really the only way to learn how to deal with life.

5. A company has announced that it wishes to build a large factory near your community. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of this new influence on your community. Do you support or oppose the factory? Explain your position.

New factories often bring many good things to a community, such as jobs and increased prosperity. However, in my opinion, the benefits of having a factory are outweighed by the risks. That is why I oppose the plan to build a factory near my community.

I believe that this city would be harmed by a large factory. In particular, a factory would destroy the quality of the air and water in town. Factories bring smog and pollution. In the long run, the environment will be hurt and people’s health will be affected. Having a factory is not worth that rise.

Of course, more jobs will be created by the factory. Our population will grow. To accommodate more workers, more homes and stores will be needed. Do we really want this much growth, so fast? If our town is going in growth, I would prefer slow growth with good planning. I don’t want to see rows of cheaply constructed townhouses. Our quality of life must be considered.

I believe that this growth will change our city too much. I love my hometown because it is a safe, small town. It is also easy to travel here. If we must expand to hold new citizens, the small-town feel will be gone. I mould miss that greatly.

A factory would be helpful in some ways. However, I feel that the dangers are greater than the benefits. I cannot support a plan to build a factory here, and hope that others feel the same way.

Reading Comprehension

The function of capital markets is to facilitate an exchange of funds among all participants, and yet in practice we find that certain participants are not on a par with others. Members of society have varying degrees of market strength in terms of information they bring to a transaction, as well as of purchasing power and creditworthiness, as defined by lenders.
For example, within minority communities, capital markets do not properly fulfill their functions; they do not provide access to the aggregate flow of funds in the United States. The GRE is now only available as a computer-adaptive test. This is how it works: instead of having a pre-determined mixture of easy, medium, and hard questions, the computer will select questions for you based on how well you are doing. The first question will be of medium difficulty; if you get it right, the second question will be selected from a large group of questions that are a little harder; if you get the first question wrong, the second will be a little easier. The result is that the test automatically adjusts to your skill level. The Tough questions have more credit than easier ones.
You can still earn a very high score even if you answer several questions incorrectly. Correct answers to Harder questions leads to large score as compared to easier questions. This means to Get large score more difficult questions has to be answered.
Some (Very few) Universities may demand Subject GRE.
After completing your exam you can send your scores (free!) to four Universities so be prepared.
Your GRE scores are valid for 5 years.
You may appear again in GRE after one month.

Total testing time is up to three hours, not including the research section. The directions at the beginning of each section specify the total number of questions in the section and the time allowed for the section.
